HOW DID JuJu Watkins become famous?

JuJu arrived at USC as the country’s top high-school recruit and immediately became one of college basketball’s leading scorers. She set the NCAA Division I freshman scoring record, earned unanimous All-American honors, and won major national player-of-the-year awards before an ACL injury in the 2025 NCAA tournament forced her to miss the following season.

BEFORE THE FAME

Born and raised in Los Angeles, JuJu played at Windward and Sierra Canyon and became a national high-school star. She won major player-of-the-year awards, represented the United States internationally, and chose hometown USC, helping restore national attention to a program with a historic women’s basketball legacy.

CLOSE WITH (ASSOCIATED)

JuJu has been coached at USC by Lindsay Gottlieb, whose system gave her freedom to become one of the country’s most dominant scorers. Her high-school and national-team years connected her with many elite players, while her shared 2023 McDonald’s All-American Game MVP honor with Hannah Hidalgo now looks like an early preview of two players who would become college basketball headliners.

Personal LIFE and Relationship

JuJu is the daughter of Robert and Sari Watkins and has three siblings. USC lists fashion among her interests, and she has openly discussed ambitions that extend beyond playing into entrepreneurship. She keeps romantic life relatively private, while family, Los Angeles, business, recovery from injury, and her determination to return to elite basketball remain the more meaningful public story.
