HOW DID Maya Erskine become famous?

Maya worked in theater and television before co-creating PEN15 with Anna Konkle. The Hulu series became acclaimed for its fearless recreation of middle-school awkwardness. She later joined Mr. & Mrs. Smith as Jane opposite Donald Glover, demonstrating a very different blend of comedy, action, and drama.

BEFORE THE FAME

Born in Los Angeles to a Japanese mother and American father, Maya studied theater at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She developed through stage work and smaller screen roles before transforming personal adolescent memories into the project that became PEN15.

Maya co-created and starred in PEN15 with Anna Konkle, one of the most important creative partnerships of her career. In Mr. & Mrs. Smith she starred opposite Donald Glover, while voice work has connected her to projects including Blue Eye Samurai.

Personal LIFE and Relationship

Maya is the daughter of Japanese actress Mutsuko Erskine and jazz drummer Peter Erskine. She is married to actor Michael Angarano, with whom she has children. Her Japanese-American identity, family experiences, and adolescence have repeatedly informed her writing and performances, particularly the intensely personal humor of PEN15.
