HOW BIG IS Naomi Girma ON THE NET?

Naomi has approximately 221,000 Instagram followers as of September 2026. That number is smaller than the celebrity-scale audiences of some attacking stars, but her reputation inside soccer is enormous: elite defending, USWNT leadership, Chelsea, and advocacy around mental health give her profile unusual depth.

HOW DID Naomi Girma become famous?

Naomi starred at Stanford before San Diego Wave selected her first overall in the 2022 NWSL Draft. She immediately won Rookie of the Year and Defender of the Year, became indispensable for the USWNT, won Olympic gold in 2024, and later made a high-profile move to Chelsea.

BEFORE THE FAME

Born in San Jose to Ethiopian immigrant parents, Naomi grew up in a community where her father helped organize soccer for local Ethiopian families. She later became a Stanford captain and national champion, combining elite soccer with an academically demanding university experience.

CLOSE WITH (ASSOCIATED);

Naomi’s Stanford years connected her deeply with goalkeeper Katie Meyer, whose death in 2022 profoundly affected her. Naomi later helped launch mental-health initiatives in Meyer’s memory. On the field, her USWNT partnership with defenders such as Emily Sonnett and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher helped create the defensive foundation for the 2024 Olympic title.

Personal LIFE and Relationship

Naomi’s Ethiopian-American identity, family, Stanford education, and mental-health advocacy are central to understanding her beyond soccer. The loss of close friend and former teammate Katie Meyer inspired Naomi to become more vocal about athlete mental health. She keeps her romantic life private, and her public story is much more meaningfully shaped by family, friendship, leadership, and advocacy.
